The Barrow County Museum is inside of the former Barrow County Jail that was built in 1914, and admission into this museum is free. Inside the museum, you can view and learn about hanging towers, jail cells, Senator Richard B. Russell, county history and Fort Yargo. At Fort Yargo State Park, you can visit a log fort built in 1792 by settlers to protect themselves against the Creek and Cherokee Indians. There are also hiking and biking trails throughout this 18-mile long park with some extraordinary views. This park also features a number of beaches, fishing spots, and boating.
If you happen to be in Winder in September, then you are in town for one of their biggest annual festivals, the Jug Tavern Festival & BBQ Cook-off. Within this week long festival, take a walk through their large car and tractor show, see carnival rides, zip lines and tractors—or go horseback riding. Enjoy some live music and performances while eating all kinds of wonderfully barbequed foods, and at night, enjoy a large fireworks show.
